2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Chester Beatty who was responsible for amassing what has been called the finest private collection of manuscripts and books of the 20th century. As a result of his gift to the nation Beatty became the first person to receive honorary citizenship of Ireland and upon his death, the first private citizen in Irish history ever to receive a state funeral.  This fascinating documentary offers us a unique insight into the man, his amazing collection and the work that goes into preserving it.

Thinking Ouside the Box for Twitter

In 1943 Prof Erwin Schrödinger gave a series of lectures in Trinity College Dublin entitled “What is Life?”.  It would lead to one of the greatest developments in modern science.  75 years on from those momentous lectures, Ireland’s Prof Luke O’Neill, a world-leading Immunologist has some questions. Who was Erwin Schrödinger?  What was the impact of his work?  And how on earth did a Nobel prize winning physicist end up in Ireland just before the outbreak of WWII?!

Airs Friday 23rd November, 7.30pm on RTE One

10_Things_SERIES 4 Title

From the microbes in our soil and cells of the human body, to exploring the furthest reaches of outer space and the secrets of our deepest oceans… we continue to celebrate Irish science.

Aoibhinn, Kathriona and Jonathan are back to investigate the latest developments in Irish scientific research and reveal the work that will impact on all our lives.  Highlights include: exploring historical shipwrecks located along of coastline; investigating promising new cancer treatments; the project that will put Ireland’s first satellite into space; a project that aims to identify biomarkers for dementia; world-first wastewater-to-energy technology and satellite driven tractors!

Perennial favourite, Dr Fergus McAuliffe, returns with his weekly Weird Science segment showcasing some of the more bizarre aspects of current research – from lost nuclear submarines on the seabed to the unusual phenomenon of geophagy – the desire to eat soil!

New series starts Monday 12th November, 8.30pm on RTE One
